Out plan had been to drive to Yellowstone Park, spend so time there and then come back to Jackson. The best laid plans ...
In Boise, on the 18th, Bruce bought a GoPro camera to mount pointing out the windshield and take videos of our trip. We used
it on Wednesday but discovered a number of problems. It came with two batteries. The first one wouldn't charge at all. The second
one charged only to 78%.
We were charging the second one and when Bruce went to check on it,
the whole GoPro, including the battery was so hot that he almost burned his hand. We bought it at a Best Buy and
the closest Best Buy to here is in Idaho Falls. He had 15 days to return it (and yes, we could have waited until we were back
in the Rogue Valley) but we decided to come back from Yellowstone by way of Idaho Falls (just a few extra hours of driving).
On our way to Yellowstone, we passed the Grand Teton National Park. Here is a photo of the Tetons from the road. It was pretty
foggy so the picture doesn't do complete justice to their magnificence.
Just into Yellowstone Park, we passed Lewis Lake. It was completely covered with ice and snow.
We drove to Old Faithful. It was steaming a bit but not yet erupting.
We checked the expected time for eruption and had the better part of an hour to kill. We went to the lodge to have lunch.
Pretty much right on schedule, Old Faithful was spewing water. The sky was about the same color as the water and steam so I wasn't able
to get a very good picture.
As we were driving toward the western park entrance (to get to Idaho Falls) we ran into a traffic jam. As we slowly got to the front of
the line we could see that it was caused by bison.
Three of them were walking along the side of the road.
The real cause of the jam was the fourth bison that preferred to walk down the middle of the road.
Finally, at the end of the day, we had put in 345.1 miles. Quite a few more than originally planned.
