Day 9, Saturday, 9/25/2021

Here is a map of the full day's ride. We stopped at the supercharger in Farmington for a few minutes before going to Aztec and back.

Breakfast

We went to breakfast at a DDD place named Harry's Roadhouse in Santa Fe.

Dick was enchanted by the special of the day.

It was half eaten before he rememebered to take a picture. It was yummy. The orange juice was fresh squeezed.

Bruce took a picture showing some of the fresh air dining options at the restaurant.

Aztec Ruins

We drove from Santa Fe to the town of Aztec with a brief stop at the supercharger in Farmington. The name Aztec was used by the early Spanish explorers for any indigenous ruins. The name stuck, but the actual inhabitants were the Ancestral Puebloans. You may see the term Anasazi. Years ago the Navajo were asked who were these people. They replied "Anasazi". Later it was realized to be the Navajo word for "old enemy".

Using the mechanisms of tree ring dating, carbon dating, and pottery dating, The period of occupancy was known to span from around 800 AD when construction began until about 1250 when site was abandoned.

We took a narrated tour of the remaining walls of the West Great House. There are also partially excavated great houses to the east and north.

There were places when the builders put in green stones for symbolic purposes that are not currently well understood.

The construction of the great houses by the Ancestral Puebloans indicate a dedicated complex civilization. They imported lumber from great distances on foot. The quarried stone from 5 miles away. The architecture of the great houses followed careful astronomical rules and were aligned with the solstices and the stars. The construction of the west great house lasted for a span of 30 years. These factors show that a complex cohesive society existed to complete these structures. We took a great many more pictures that are linked below to illustrate the amazing achievements of a little known part of our history.
