This morning we got up early and headed west. First we drove to Lake Louise. We got
as far as the parking lot and discovered that there was a 10 minute walk to actually
see the lake. The weather was a little drizzley so we opted to continue on our trip.
We stopped at four superchargers before ending up in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver.
Shortly after leaving Lake Louise we noticed a railroad related display on the
side of the road. We stopped and learned about a couple of spiral tunnels that were
blasted into the mountain to lower the grade so that it wasn't so steep.
There were some spectacular views out the windows of our car as we drove. Here are
a few examples. Bruce really liked the "velvety" snow in the third picture.
There was a pretty high fence along both sides of the highway to
keep wildlife from coming across the road where folks were going 120 (km/hr). Every
so often there were "wildlife overpasses" to allow the fauna to cross over the
highway.
There were dense forests full of very tall trees with few branches
near the bottom. It was an example of the trees growing tall to fight for sunlight.
As we were pulling into Revelstoke to the supercharger, we saw a billboard
advertizing a railroad museum. We definitely had to visit it.
There was a cute little hand driven tricycle that was used to examine the
tracks.
Bruce liked a model of one of the local railroad bridges. They
also had an HO gauge model layout but we didn't get any photos of it. One of
the volunteers was there working on it. Bruce had a nice long conversation
with him about various things.
When we left the museum (which was "across the tracks" from
the highway) there was a train stopped blocking our way out. After a while
it start moving but there were over 100 cars, most of which were container
gondolas that held two shipping containers stacked on top of one another.
Today we put in 886 kilometers, bringing us up to 5,426.
