Today we toured Canyonlands National Park.
On our way to Canyonlands we passed two large monoliths that are said to
resemble the armored civil war ships, the Monitor and the Merrimac.
Hoodoos are tall, skinny spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of
arid basins or badlands.
At the green river overlook you can see the river threading its way through
the canyons. Here is a photo and a movie showing the vast rugged
expanse of Canyonlands.
We stopped at an overlook of Buck's Canyon.
Juniper trees are all over the southwest. The berries are used to make gin.
At one of our stops we saw a murder of crows (ravens?). Dick took a
handfull of one of our snack mixes, crushed it a bit and spread
it out on the tarmac. The birds seemed to enjoy it.
At a stop called Grandview, we took a movie showing the
vast expanse of the canyon lands of the desert southwest.
At our final two stops we photographed a large somewhat rounded
formation called Whale Rock and another formation called Upheaval Dome
At the end of the day we drove 108 miles.
