Day 18, Tuesday, 7/14/2026. Not so pleasant last day

The plan for today was to take a reasonably short drive to Reno, check into our hotel and take Bruce's son out to dinner. When I (Dick) woke up, I discovered that Bruce had spent most of the night on the toilet, and had a lot of stomach pain. We googled for an urgent care facility in Battle Mountain and found a clinic that opened an 7:00 AM. We got there at 7:00 and he was able to see a doctor. She noted that his symptoms were similar to those of cyclosporiasis, caused by a microscopic parasite that "causes severe, watery diarrhea" and is associated with leafy greens. Maybe the salad bar a couple of days ago wasn't such a good idea.

Apparently it would take a week to know for sure, but taking the drugs against cyclospora wouldn't cause harm if he didn't have the infestation. We went to the pharmacy and picked up three prescription. Even after taking the first dose of the prescriptions, Bruce felt quite a bit better.

Bruce talked to his son and came up with an alternative plan for the day. When we got to Geoff's place, we moved Bruce's stuff into Geoff's car and they drove to Bruce's home in Menlo Park, CA. Dick drove home to Ashland. Both of us got to our destinations before dark.

Driving home through Susanville brought back fond memories of our first "excellent" adventure. Back in 2021, we charged in Susanville the day after the supercharger there went into service. It definitely improved our route to Ashland from Reno. You can read from the first adventure to see what the alternative would have been.

At the end of the day, Dick had driven 542 miles. The entire trip (for Dick) was 4198 miles.

Back to day 17.
