Day 13, Saturday, 8/19/2023, Hallmark; WW1 Memorial

We went to the Hallmark visitor center, then to the World War 1 memorial. We went to a supercharger so we will have some electrons tomorrow then back to the hotel to rest. It was 106 outside and we were pretty tired. After resting a while and working on this website, we went and had some very good BBQ.

Hallmark Center

The Hallmark Visitor Center is part of the "Crown Center" which is a huge complex. We saw a very touching film about the history of Hallmark and wandered through the museum. In 1951, there was a major flood. J. C. Hall lead the recovery effort for the city. He commissioned Norman Rockwell to produce a painting called "The Spirit of Kansas City."

There were exhibits of J.C. Hall's relationship with a number of well know characters. Here are pictures of exhibits about Dwight Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, Walt Disney, and Maya Angelou. The exhibits were behind glass so please excuse the reflections.

Here are a few more pictures from the visit.

World War 1 Museum

We visited the World War 1 Museum. Here is a picture of the outside plus a couple of collection of ads for war support.

We took pictures of some WW1 weapons after watching two movies about the leadup to the war and America's entry into the war.

There was a special exhibit on prosthetics prompted by WW1 casualties. Here are pictures of a couple of research doctors involved in the business and several pictures of users of prosthetics.

Joe's BBQ

When Elaine surprised Dick with a trip to KC for BBQ on his 65th birthday, they tried a number of BBQ joints. Their favorite was Joe's, which is also a gas station. The line was out the door and went around the whole restaurant once inside but the wait wasn't all that long. Dick had the "Cowboy" special with 2 ribs, sausage, and brisket. It came with two sides: BBQ beans and slaw. The beans were wonderful as were all the meats. The slaw was okay. Bruce had ribs and chicken with sides of beans and potato salad. The potato salad was meh, but everything else was wonderful.

Finally, at the end of the day, we had put in 45 miles. Tomorrow is a drive from Kansas City to Denver. It's going to be a long day and we probably won't take many pictures.
