Day 11, Tuesday, 7/16/2024, DESCRIPTION

This morning we drove the final 48 miles down to the beginning of US-1 in Key West. We spent over an hour at the final home of Earnest Hemmingway (which is also the home of a museum about his life and work). We drove around a bit on Key West and did a little shopping. Then we came back to our hotel on Marathon. We took a well deserved nap and then went to dinner at an excellent seafood restaurant near our hotel called The Castaway Waterfront Restaurant. After dinner, we came back to our hotel and watched the Florida Keys sunset.

On the navigation map, there were markers for a tree and a bush that were on a tiny island miles from any other land along side the causeway between the larger keys. Somebody gave them names. They are growing next to the old railroad causeway that is in disrepair.

The Hemmingway residence and museum is on Key West. We took an interesting guided tour and snapped a few pictures.

In a separate building behind the house was Hemmingway's writing studio. You can see his typewriter. Over 70% of his fiction was written in this studio.

Near our hotel is a lighthouse that still has a revolving beacon. We waited around a half hour or so to be able to take a picture of the sunset. The setting was behind a peninsula near the hotel but the trees there made for a pretty sight.

Finally, at the end of the day, we had put in 99 miles.
