We decided that rather than drive to Houston from Vail in two days, we
would get a bit of a headstart today. We drove to Van Horn, Texas. Along
the way, we stopped a couple of times.
We stopped at a rest area near Dragoon,AZ that had very interesting
rock formations and a spring (which was fenced off).
The most famous thing to happen at Dragoon Springs was a treaty that
Cochise (chief of the Chiricahua Apache) ratified to end years
of warfare between the tribe and settlers.
Shortly afterwords, we keep seeing signs about "The Thing" along
the road so we stopped at
the store that had put up the signs. When you first
enter the store you are met by many many tchotchkes for sale.
At the far end of the store, there is the entrance to a fairly large
"museum" that is based on the "WHAT IF" idea that dinosaurs were
controlled
by aliens. There are many exhibits and a continuing story about good
aliens vs bad aliens and their dino connections.
Here are pictures of some of the museum displays.
Finally, at the end of the day, we had put in 435 miles.
